Blizzard keeps name after Activision merger

Blizzard’s new name after the Vivendi-Activision merger Activision + Blizzard = Blizzardvision … is still Blizzard Entertainment. The finishing touch last week to the merger created Activision Blizzard as the parent company of Irvine game developer, known for World of Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo games.

That’s a nice touch since Blizzard has been under several parent companies since the mid 1990s (Davidson & Associates, Cendant, Havas, Vivendi, to name a few), but none had ever given Blizzard marquee status.

“We are still Blizzard Entertainment, and we’ll continue developing and publishing games as Blizzard Entertainment,” Bob Colayco, a Blizzard spokesman, clarified to me in an e-mail.  “Activision Blizzard is the new parent company, but that’s an investor-level name. You’re not going to see, for example, the Activision logo appearing on World of Warcraft boxes, or the Blizzard brand popping up on Guitar Hero cases.”
